jiayunzhuangJiayun is a performance studies scholar and playwright. She received her Ph.D. in Theater and Performance Studies in the critical studies program at UCLA’s Department of Theater. She held an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at Whittier College. She joined the Department of Dramatic Art in the fall of 2010 as an assistant professor, and teaches courses in World Theater & Performance, the Body in East Asian Theater, and Introduction to Performance Studies.

Her current research draws on performance theories to examine the ways in which contemporary Chinese dance-theater, performance art, and visual art re-signify the prior socio-political codes that continue to inform the post-socialist present. Her research interests also encompass theories of the body, performance and urban space, and East Asian theatre/performance in relation to Inter-Asia cultural studies. She is currently working on her first book manuscript on post-socialist performance and visual art in urban China.
