The Playwriting Studio's mission is to assist playwrights to realize their visions. It provides access to actors, production staff, and dramaturgs; as well as an audience for informal and staged readings, focused on making the playwright's work come alive during the creative process.

The Playwriting Studio also conducts the competition for the Sam Selden Prize for Playwriting. The juried prize is awarded annually for a new play by an Undergraduate Student at UNC-CH. The prize includes a cash award and a staged reading of the winning play is given in the spring.
