Ray Dooley
Professor of Acting Emeritus
Professor Dooley appeared in more than 100 productions for PlayMakers Repertory Company. He was a member of the faculty from 1992 to 2022, serving as Chair of the Department from 1999 to 2005, and as head of the Professional Actor Training Program from 2005 to 2018. His work beyond UNC spans more than 45 years in film, television, and stages across the United States and abroad, most recently in the Disney/Hulu limited series, Dopesick, and as Polonius in the Guthrie Theater’s 60th Anniversary production of Hamlet. He is the recipient of a Village Voice OBIE Award for Distinguished Performance in Peer Gynt at CSC Repertory; he played Father Flynn in the European premiere of Doubt at Vienna’s English Theatre. Professor Dooley is a member of Actors Equity Association, SAG-AFTRA, and Canadian Actors Equity Association.
At UNC Professor Dooley taught graduate and undergraduate acting, and courses in dramatic literature. He received the C. Knox Massey Award for Unusual, Meritorious, and Superior Service to the University, and the Jonathan B. Howes Lifetime Achievement Award for Public Service.
Professor Dooley received his M.F.A. in Acting from The American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Hamilton College.
