How to Apply
1 – Send the following:
A Portfolio, which contains images demonstrating examples of skills related to the discipline, photos of realized productions, and any other supporting evidence of professional experience. It must include text describing the images. It may be submitted via email in PowerPoint format or a link to the applicant’s website.
A Resume, which includes work experience, education, and references. Note that no GRE score is required for admission to the costume production MFA program.
A Statement of Purpose, which consists of a 500 word explanation of the student’s educational and professional goals.
Three References, who can speak to your interest and ability in costume technology. Please supply email address and phone number.
Applicants who have sent their materials before February 1 will be given primary consideration.

2 – Visit
Not all applicants are invited to visit. It is ideal to visit in person but if that’s not possible it can be done remotely.
On review of the materials by the faculty of the costume production program, the prospective student may be invited to schedule an interview. The interview will include participation in classes, conversations with current students and staff, and a portfolio presentation.
Ideally, the interview should take place before February 28th.
If you are invited to visit UNC, you must:
Start a UNC Chapel Hill Graduate School Application to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This application must be completed except for paying the fee. It must be accompanied by three letters of recommendation and two copies of the applicant’s official undergraduate transcripts.
3 – Complete the Graduate School Application
After the interviews, prospective students should complete the Graduate School application including all transcripts, letters of recommendation and fees. Graduate Upload the statement of purpose a second time in the Supplemental Document(s) – Required section. Students must be accepted to the Graduate School before they can be accepted by the program. Offers are usually made in the middle of March. Therefore, all applications should be completed through the Graduate School before March 1st, regardless of the date listed on the Graduate School website. 4 – Acceptance
Applicants are accepted for the first year only; entrance to the second and third year classes is subject to approval of the MFA faculty.
Financial Aid:
The costume department can offer a financial package to all students. The details change year to year, but the package includes Out of State tuition waiver for the first year, In State tuition, student fees and a stipend. Students may also seek financial aid from the University. They must submit the FAFSA form to the College Scholarship Service, Princeton, NJ by March 1 for priority consideration.
Students must do everything in their power to achieve North Carolina residency after a year in the state. Out-of-state tuition remission is not guaranteed after the first year. Students should be prepared to complete the basic requirements for residency before the first day of class in their first year.
