Anti-Asian Violence StatementMarch 21, 2021
We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred this week in Atlanta, resulting in the death of eight people, including six women of Asian descent. This is just the latest manifestation of a dramatic increase in anti-Asian violence throughout the country and a long legacy of anti-Asian violence in the United States that must be vigorously countered. Both the Department of Dramatic Art and PlayMakers Repertory Company value the Asian-American artists, educators, staff, and students in our midst. We will continue to look for ways to support any and all members of our community when hate and horror touch them, as well as continue to incorporate into our artistic and educational mission the celebration of the richness, diversity, and history of Asian America.
In addition to Counseling and Psychological Services for students, and the Employee Assistance Program for faculty and staff, the Asian American Center has a resources page of hate crime reporting mechanisms and student-curated mental health resources, should you need them. Additional resources and action steps can be found on the Departmental Access, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion page.
What can you do?
• Counter racist descriptions of COVID-19 and Anti-Asian stereotypes when you hear them.
• Call on your Friends, Family, Governor, Senators, Representatives, and Community Leaders to stand in solidarity with Asian Americans and to better protect our communities
Please reach out if you need anything.
